Sandra Jean Riggs was born on August 22, 1940 and passed away on June 17, 2016 in Janesville, WI. Sandy, the loving daughter of La Verne and Grace Riggs grew up with five brothers in Chicago, IL where she attended Morgan Park High School. She also attended both Ohio Wesleyan University and the University of Iowa where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree. Following graduation, she taught second grade in Littleton, CO. Sandy’s career in education continued on the east coast where she received a Masters of Library Science from South Connecticut State University. She had a long career as a writer of educational materials for several publishers and developed learning material for grades K through six. Included in her writings were twelve books that she had authored. While living in Amhurst, Massachusetts, she was a member of the Amhurst Club and served as president of the Amhurst Ballet. Sandy loved supporting many wild life and animal rescue causes including the House Rabbit Society. She enjoyed caring for her bunnies, Clover, Bumble Bee, Cricket, Ladybug and Blossum. Other joys for her were being outdoors, hiking, the theater, playing scrabble and traveling the world.
Sandy was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Leo Riggs and James Riggs, and her nephew, Alex Riggs. She is survived by her brothers, John Riggs, Thomas Riggs (Carol) and Ted Riggs (Pat) and her bunny buddy, Blossum. Twelve nieces and nephews will dearly miss their aunt Sandy. Her life was greatly enriched by special friends, Barb La Chapell and Brenda Wenzel and by her best friend Carol Riggs.
Per Sandy’s request, no services will be held. Private burial will be by her parents in the Arlington Heights Cemetery in Audubon, Iowa. The Riggs family is being assisted by Henke-Clarson Funeral Home, Janesville, WI.
